What to expect

Massage Therapy is the application usually by hands of systematic stroking or manipulation to the soft tissues of the body in a therapeutic way to alleviate pain and discomfort. Some of the more common movements are those that involve long strokes and gliding, called effleurage, deep kneading, surface friction, fascial rolling, percussion and cupping to the soft tissues of the body. These methods are used to either invigorate or relax the muscles of the body to promote healing, relaxation or stress reduction. A therapist is either looking to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, using techniques that are invigorating or activate the parasympathetic nervous system, by using a more calming, constant and rythmic flow to their techniques to access a deeper relaxation effect.

The benefits:

Massage Therapy benefits people of all ages and is beneficial in the treatment of injuries, various illnesses and stress related conditions. Massage Therapy is used to control pain as it breaks pain cycles and eliminates the original source of pain by increasing blood flow to blood deprived tissue. It also improves circulation by causing an immediate dilation of capillaries and vessels. There have been shown to be in studies a reduction in blood pressure and heart rate after a 20 minute back massage. With use of specialized massage techniques such as manual lymph drainage studies have shown a significant increase in the normal rate of lymph flow, this is especially significant where edema and inflamation are present. Massage therapy can relax muscles, decrease spasms, increase length of resting muscles and reduce trigger points, fibrosis and adhesions. Stress is also shown to decrease the immune response resulting in susceptibility to illness. Massage reduces stress levels and improves immune function, therefore massage can benefit the immune system. Massage is also able to reduce stress, anxiety, depression and give the client a feeling of well being and relaxation.
